Arrival and Stonehenge

Wednesday, 11 June 2014

We arrived! Our flight landed at Heathrow, London just before noon. The day was warm and sunny. We made it through airport security quite quickly but had to wait about an hour for our rental car. We finally left with a brand new, white Ford Mondeo--which gave us more room (for people and luggage) than we'd anticipated. Great for traveling; awful for narrow roads and parking!

We drove as far as Amesbury and checked into the Bed and Breakfast. It was an older home with an incredible back yard. Our host, Nick, was very helpful. We walked into the village and had dinner at the local pub (The Bell). Elizabeth tried "bangers and mash" for the first time and gave it two thumbs up. After dinner, we headed to Stonehenge.

I'd never been to Stonehenge before, and I was pleasantly surprised. They've built a new museum there and they run shuttles to the stones themselves. They have white, thatched roof homes built and furnished the way they imagine the homes would have looked during the era in which Stonehenge was built. Wild poppies were in bloom everywhere. They looked beautiful. Unfortunately, the farmers were cutting silage and, with the exception of Kent, we were all sneezing and sniffing as though we had terrible colds! We finished the evening off by trying a new ice-cream flavor--clotted cream. It was locally made and tasted like a sweet vanilla.
